Ever since reading about Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton, I have always wanted to take an adventure trip to Antarctica. The problem was, my options were either to take a cruise, and if I get lucky, make a few Zodiac landings, or spend $26,000 and go climb Mt Vinson. Well, GeoEx and Lindblad partnered up and offered a chance for climbers to re-create Shackleton's traverse of South Georgia Island from King Haakon Bay to Stromness Bay--on foot. Instead of doing the crossing in 32 straight hours like Shackleton did, we made the trip in three long days. We carried full packs and pulled sleds--we didn't have sled dogs, WE were the dogs. South Georgia Island is located south of the Antarctic Convergence and in the path of the deep atmospheric depressions of the Drake Passage, which make South Georgia subject to horrendous storms and the katabatic winds--which made things interesting on day two of our trip. This was technical trekking at its most adventurous! |
